Mullimburra Point Fishing Day
A full crew day trip — rock and beach fishing, Bilal’s seekh BBQ with fresh chai made on the spot, a walk around the headland, and home by 6 pm.
🔞 Adults only this trip — it’s a remote spot with rock platforms and open water, so no kids this time. We’ll do a family-friendly one soon.
Meeting point: Lanyon Marketplace McDonald's, Conder ACT
Meet in the car park from 6:00 am. Convoy rolls at 6:15 sharp — if you miss it, don’t wait around: drive directly to Mullimburra Point and meet us there.
North-siders: Bungendore, NSW — 7:00 am
Coming from the north side and can’t make Lanyon? Join the convoy at Bungendore instead — be there and ready by 7:00 am, the convoy passes straight through.
Who's in

Trip Story — How It Went
Sat 5 Sep 202615 of the Canberra fishing crew, a fleet of BYD Sharks, and a full South Coast day — fishing, seekh BBQ, cooking the catch, the headland walk, off-roading, ice cream, and fish & chips on the way home.
The convoy rolled out of Lanyon at 6:15 am sharp, swept through Bungendore at 7 for the north-siders, and hit Batemans Bay for coffee and bait. We were rigged up at Mullimburra by mid-morning and saw every kind of weather the coast could throw at us. Fish were caught (sorry Salik), seekhs went on the coals with three different marinades, chai was poured, Bilal led the walk along the Bingi Dreaming Track, the Sharks got some off-road time, and with the day going so well we stuck around for golden hour before rolling home via ice cream and fish & chips at the bay, pulling in about 9:30 pm. Alhamdulillah, a memorable one.

The convoy route — Lanyon → Bungendore → Batemans Bay → Mullimburra Point (199 km each way)
- Sat ~9:30 am
Arrive Mullimburra — Rig Up
Down Mullimburra Point Road, gear walked in, rods rigged. Sunscreen on before the first cast — and the weather started cycling through its whole repertoire.
- Sat 10:15 am – 12:30 pm
Fishing Session One
Rocks for the salmon, beach gutters for bream and whiting. First-timers on the rods with Atif coaching — and actual fish came up (Salik’s dignity remains TBC).
- Sat ~2:00 – 3:00 pm
Bilal’s Walk — Bingi Dreaming Track
Bilal led the crew along the coast on the Bingi Dreaming Track — song-lines country of the Brinja-Yuin people. (Exact route from Atif’s Garmin coming once it’s found!)

Fishing — Gear, Lures & Bait
🎣 First time fishing? This is your section — the rest is optional reading.
- No gear? No problem — tell Atif before Friday and we’ll allocate you a spare rod, rigged and ready
- Buying your own: a $40–60 8 ft rod-and-reel combo from BCF/Anaconda is all you need to start — ask for a “beach/rock combo, 6–10 kg”
- Bait is sorted on the way: we stop at a Batemans Bay tackle shop for live beach worms/nippers and a block of pilchards — chip in ~$10 each
- NSW recreational fishing licence — everyone fishing MUST have one. Buy online at Service NSW before Saturday (a few dollars for 3 days, 2 minutes on your phone)
- Wear shoes with real grip (old sneakers fine, no smooth soles) — you’ll be on rock
- Bring a plastic bag for your catch and we’ll show you how to clean it
- That’s genuinely it — casting, rigging, and what to do when something pulls back: we teach you on the day
For those with gear
- Rod & reel: 8–10 ft rock/beach outfit if you have one (spares available — just ask)
- Line: 15–20 lb mono or 20–30 lb braid with 30–40 lb leader
- Rigs: paternoster rigs (size 2–4 hooks) for bream & whiting; ganged 4/0s for pilchard baits
- Sinkers: star/snapper leads 20–60 g (surf can be strong)
- Lures: 40–60 g metal slugs (Halco Twisty/Raider style) for salmon & tailor; a few 3–5 inch paddle-tail soft plastics
- Tools: knife, pliers, bucket, rag, scaler, spare rigs
September at Bingie: salmon and tailor off the rocks are the main show, with bream, whiting and the odd drummer around the washes and beach gutters. Dawn and the last two hours of the run-in tide fish best — check the tide time on the BoM link above and we'll plan the session around it.
Bilal's Headland Walk & Beach Time
After lunch Bilal is leading an easy walk around the headland and along the beach — short, flat-ish, great views back over the point and a chance to spot the gutters for the afternoon session. Route options below — Bilal picks on the day.
The headland wander (default plan)
~1.5 km · 20–30 min · easy
Straight from the picnic area around Mullimburra Point itself and along the beach edge. Fits the lunch window with room to spare.
Bingi Dreaming Track — south to Bingie Bingie Point
up to 4.0 km one-way · Grade 3 · turn around whenever
The gold route on the map — the famous track itself, following the song lines of the Brinja-Yuin people along the coast. Full return to Bingie Bingie Point is ~2 hrs, so Bilal calls a 25-minute turnaround for this trip. September bonus: Bingie Bingie Point is a whale-spotting lookout in migration season, with views to Gulaga and Montague Island.
North to Congo Beach (one for next time)
6.8 km one-way · Grade 3
The same track runs north past Meringo to Congo — too long for Saturday’s window, but it’s in the GPX for a future trip. The full Bingi Dreaming Track (Congo → Tuross Head, 13.5 km, 4–6 hrs) links historic campsites, ceremonial and trade sites — one to do properly another day.

The Convoy
15 people — fewer cars is better. Three cars covers everyone; claim a seat or volunteer to drive via Atif.
Convoy 1 — Sheraz's BYD Shark 🛻 · Lanyon McDonald's, 6:15 am
Driver: Sheraz · with Atif, Haider, Salman
Full — Salman claimed the last seat in the Shark.
Convoy 2 — Shoaib bhai's BYD Shark 🛻 · Bungendore, 7:00 am
Driver: Shoaib bhai · with Bilal, Sherry bhai, Ali
Shark #2 — full. Be ready to roll at 7:00.
Convoy 3 — Fahad's BYD Shark 🛻 · Bungendore, 7:00 am
Driver: Fahad · 3 seats free
CONFIRMED — full Shark fleet 🦈🦈🦈. Three seats behind Fahad up for grabs.
Convoy 4 — one more seat NEEDED 🚨
Driver: Volunteer wanted · 4 seats free
We’re now 14 with 3 Sharks = 12 seats — five of you are chasing Fahad’s three seats, so we NEED a 4th car. Join from Lanyon 6:15 or Bungendore 7:00, whichever suits. Message Atif.
🙋 Still need a seat: Mohammad bhai, Ammar, Mustafa, Mustafa's Baba, Salik
Still need a seat? Please liaise directly with the convoy leads (Sheraz, Shoaib bhai or Fahad) to sort out which car you’re coming in — and work out between yourselves how you’ll get to the meeting point, or whether your convoy lead will pick you up on the way.
Convoy rolls from Lanyon McDonald's at 6:15 am sharp — miss it and you drive direct. Drivers: fuel up Friday night.
⛽ Please organise to split fuel costs with your convoy leader (Sheraz, Shoaib or Fahad) — sort it on the day so the drivers aren't out of pocket.
What to Bring
- Sunscreen 50+ and a hat — non-negotiable, reapply during the day
- Sunglasses (polarised if you have them — you can spot fish and see the rocks under waves)
- Warm layer + windproof jacket (cold early start, exposed headland)
- Raincoat — there’s a chance of a shower and we push through; those fish are waiting
- Change of clothes & thongs/sandals for the drive home
- Sturdy shoes with grip for the rocks (no smooth soles)
- Your BYO lunch, snacks and 2 L of water
- Camp chair or picnic rug
- Cash/card for the bait stop
- Power bank — reception is patchy and cameras drain batteries
Leave at Home
- Kids — not this one. Remote area, rock platforms, open water
- Glass bottles — sand, rocks and glass don’t mix
- Valuables you’d cry about losing in the sand
- Big speakers — it’s a quiet spot, let’s keep it that way
- Anything you plan to leave behind — we carry out everything we carry in
Safety — Read This
- Footwear is the #1 safety item: wear SOLID shoes with real grip — wet rock is like ice. Better still, get spiked footwear (links below). Safety comes first on this trip.
- Rocks: never turn your back on the ocean. Watch the platform for 10 minutes before stepping on, stay off wet rock, and if in doubt fish the beach instead.
- Lifejackets: recommended on the rocks. This spot isn’t particularly dangerous as far as rock platforms go, but a lifejacket is cheap insurance — wear one if you have one (they’re not legally required in Eurobodalla), and we’ll have a couple to share.
- Adults only, and nobody fishes the rocks alone — always in pairs, always within sight of the group.
- Chai burner: on flat rock or the table only, away from dry grass — and check for total fire bans on the day.
- Phone reception is patchy — agree on a meeting point when we arrive. Atif carries the Garmin inReach for emergencies.
👟 Rock footwear — get sorted before Saturday
